Comic Relief Case Study - Education changing lives

"Going to school and getting a good education is key to Liso improving his life chances and with the support of a Comic Relief funded Maths Programme being run in his school by Green Shoots he is embracing learning and improving his grades."
An amazing story of a learner, at a Green Shoots supported school, was featured by Comic Relief.
You can read the full story by clicking here
The sustained and widespread change to practice as reported by teachers (participating on this Project) between 2016 and 2017, is encouraging in light of the many failed education reform initiatives that have been attempted in the past two decades in South Africa.
As teachers indicate, the effect this is having on learners is no longer limited to MCO but affecting the   in-class learning of Mathematics and general perceptions to Maths in schools.  - Comments from the 2018 Interim Evaluation by Etilab.

District Standardized Maths Assessment Roll-out

Real time, ongoing feedback is vital for all education system stakeholders.
Green Shoots partners with Education Districts to impact the maximum number of Primary school learners. Per learner, weekly progress data from the classroom is aggregated to allow the identification of both issues with Maths learning  and wider systemic issues. Stakeholders; teachers, school managements and District officials; can then collaborate to design strategies and interventions to tackle major learning barriers or target specific learner interventions. (Now completed)
Credible, real-time feedback from the classroom and learner analytics allows us to identify learning barriers and learners who are struggling. This data can inform the planning of our interventions and support strategies. The use of technology means that data is available with minimal admin for our teachers.
District Standardised Maths Assessments
The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation provided a grant for Green Shoots to work with an Education District to deliver blended online Maths Assessments with real-time learning analytics to grades 3 -7.
'Data Informed Decisions Initiative' launched in partnership with Metro South Education District.
On 27th May, 2017 this initiative was launched for all Primary schools in the District. MCO is now a key component of the District's Maths curriculum delivery and support efforts.
Green Shoots partners with four Education Districts and supports schools in 8 Districts overall.

GlobalGiving

As I watched from the back of the room, a boy suddenly pumped his fist in the air with a loud, "Yes!" and the biggest smile on his face. He had just completed a set of math exercises and had received positive feedback from the program - a good score, a score that he could be proud of, a score that gave him self-confidence and motivated him to do even better." Chi Nguyen, In-The-Field Global Giving Representative
Donations from individuals and companies worldwide have allowed Green Shoots to provide support to 3 Primary Schools in the Cape Town Metropole.

Global Giving is a charity fundraising web site that gives social entrepreneurs and non-profits from anywhere in the world a chance to raise the money that they need to improve their communities.

The weekly (online) exercises helps me to plan ahead and gives me an indication of which learners are still struggling with certain concepts. The MCO assessment data shows the problem areas. Zisukhanyo Schools Project

Green Shoots implemented the Zisukhanyo Schools Project (ZSP) Stages II & III on behalf of the ZSP owner, Protea  Eduction Development Project (PEDP,) and the ZSP main donor, Human Dignity Foundation.

ZSP Stage II concluded in June 2013, and ZSP Stage III in June 2014. The schools involved continue to use MCO to support their Maths Curriculum.

Through the Zisukhanyo Schools Project we supported...
• 8427 learners
• 152 teachers
• 16 schools
• 25 youth development posts
The ZSP approach and technology support are now institutionalised in all schools visited. Clearly the learning process and teacher professional lives have changed for the better as a result of ZSP. With regard to the learners, there is strong evidence that the ZSP has resulted in real improvements in numeracy…it can be concluded that the ZSP has resulted in significant improvements in Grade 6 numeracy levels."
Dr J. Miller, External Evaluator for the ZSP
