Data Informed Decisions through Technology Assisted Learning
Like so many developing nations across the world, South Africa is struggling to deliver quality Primary Education to all of its children particularly with respect to Maths. Many schools face the challenges of poverty, poor infrastructure, large class sizes and children learning in a second language. Green Shoots has harnessed an ability to collect learner data using technology and has utilised it to craft a people-focused solution that is significantly improving Maths teaching & learning in schools of all contexts.
To impact the maximum number of learners at a sustainable level, a solution needed to be designed that would not simply address problems within the classroom but also those of the wider education system. Credible, real time, ongoing feedback from the classroom and learner analytics are vital for all the education system stakeholders. Only then can they address in the most effective way the major learning barriers and teaching blockages.
Although this project utilises an ICT based tool, the key factor of its impact and sustainability is its comprehensive ‘warmware’ development' component for stakeholders at all levels of the Education system. Providing the customised data analysis to the different stakeholder groups is not sufficient to effect a change; there needs to be a structured programme of support and capacitation to ensure this new way of thinking is understood, embraced and institutionalised.
