"Education is for improving the lives of the others and for leaving our community and the world better than you found it." Marian Wright Edelman
56% of the children in South Africa live below the poverty line (StatsSA, 2014).
Access to qualityeducation is one of the most powerful weapons available to break the poverty cycle for these children. Like so many developing nations across the world, South Africa is struggling to deliver quality Primary Education to all of its children particularly with respect to Maths.
Green Shoots passionately believes in and strives to encourage this outcome of ‘Quality education for ALL.’ We know that the targeted use of technology is an potent tool which can assist in tackling the enormous problems facing the South African education system especially with respect to the gateway subjects including Maths & Science.
Green Shoots works with schools from all socio-economic backgrounds; however we focus on assisting schools and communities that are facing the greatest challenges and barriers to learning. Some of the challenges faced by communities that we serve: · Schools with poor physical infrastructure · Children learning in another language other than their mother tongue · Limited parental involvement with the schools and learners · Child headed households or single working parent households · Widespread poverty and unemployment · High levels of substance abuse and gangsterism
We have seen that our programmes not only impact the educational prospectives of learners in these challenged communities but also bring hope and inspiration to the wider community.
